An audiogram or hearing test helps us to understand if you have hearing loss, and to assess your inner ear thoroughly so that we can identify the reason. We will recommend you for surgery if we are convinced that it is the only way to treat your condition. Of course, we don’t start off with surgery; we first try to resolve your problem with medication. If it does not help in treating your ear problems, we will re-evaluate your condition, and then take a call.
In most cases, you will be allowed to go home a while after your surgery. You will be kept under observation after your surgery, and if all seems normal, you can go home. If we feel that you need to be under medical supervision overnight, you will be asked to stay overnight at the hospital.
The surgery to repair your perforated eardrum can take anything from 10 minutes to 3 hours, depending on how big the perforation is, and where it is located.
We can perform the surgery with a local anesthetic where you will be awake but won’t feel anything; we can also put you under general anesthesia where you will be asleep and won’t know anything at all. We will have a detailed discussion before the surgery and finalize on the method.
- Do NOT put anything in your ears, other than eardrops if we prescribe them.
- If there’s any drainage from your ear, gently set a sterile cotton ball in the ear to absorb it
- Gently place cotton balls in your ears before you shower
- To dry, gently dab your ear region after your shower, do NOT rub
- Do not go swimming, or take a flight till we give you the go ahead
You may have some drainage and bloody discharge, and mild pain and soreness for a maximum of 7 days after your surgery. This is normal; you may be given pain relief medications. However, be sure to come in for an emergency consultation if you experience any of the following:
- Severe pain
- Heavy bleeding
- High temperature
- Severe nausea or vomiting
- Breathing trouble
- Dizziness
- Facial weakness
